Can Home Sharing Help Ease Housing Pressure in BC?

Housing pressure in British Columbia combined with rising costs, limited availability, and long waitlists make it difficult for many people to find stable housing. For adults with disabilities, the challenge can be even greater when housing also needs to include the right level of support.

One housing model that already supports many people across British Columbia is home sharing. Home sharing connects individuals with disabilities and home sharing providers who offer a shared home environment that supports independence, stability, and community connection.

What Is Home Sharing and How Does It Work

Home sharing is a living arrangement where an adult with a disability lives in the home of a home sharing provider. The provider offers support with daily living while creating a safe and welcoming home environment. Home sharing providers receive a monthly stipend in return for their services.

The aim is simple, people  with disabilities live in neighbourhood homes and take part in everyday community life.

Why Home Sharing Matters for Housing in BC

Most discussions about housing focus on building new units. New construction plays an important role in addressing housing shortages, but building projects can take years to complete.

At the same time, home sharing in BC already provides housing and support for many adults with disabilities. Because the model uses homes that already exist, it can expand housing options without waiting for new developments to be built.  For families searching for housing for adults with disabilities, home sharing can offer a stable and community-based option.

A Community Based Living Option

Home sharing is built on relationships and community participation. People live in homes in communities of their choice, and remain connected to their family, friends and loved ones.

Living in a shared home environment can help people maintain routines, build confidence, and strengthen their sense of independence.

Making Use of Existing Homes

Home sharing  doesn’t require new builds, by making use of existing homes in communities across the province.

Many households in British Columbia have additional space. At the same time, many adults with disabilities are searching for safe and supportive living arrangements.  Expanding knowledge about the model can help strengthen housing solutions that support independence, dignity, and belonging  for people with disabilities.

The Role of Home Sharing Providers

Behind every home sharing arrangement is a home sharing provider who opens their home and supports another person.

Home sharing providers play an important role in our communities. They help individuals build stable lives, develop independence, and stay connected to their communities.

As housing pressure grows in British Columbia, recruiting and supporting more home sharing providers may become increasingly important.

Example of Home Sharing in Practice

Alex wanted to live more independently but still needed support with daily routines and transportation. Through home sharing, Alex moved into a shared home with a provider who helps with planning meals, attending appointments, and getting involved in local activities.

Today Alex works part time, participates in community programs, and continues building independence while living in a supportive home environment.
