HSP Awards

Shining a spotlight on those who share their home to the community, and make a difference in someone’s life

Honour the excellence

The Home Sharing Provider Awards returns for its third year in 2026, bringing the home sharing community together to celebrate excellence in home sharing across British Columbia. Home sharing is a living arrangement where an adult with a disability shares a home with a home sharing provider who offers daily support, connection, and opportunities to participate in community life. This annual event recognizes the individuals and home sharing providers who are building inclusive homes, strengthening communities, and supporting people to live self directed lives.

Join us as we recognize excellence, share stories from across the home sharing community.

Walk in my shoes

Home sharing is built on partnership. Individuals, providers, families, agencies, funders, and community members all contribute to its success. The theme of HSP Awards 2026 is Walk in My Shoes, reflecting the stories and experiences that shape home sharing. Each journey is different, and the awards create space for these stories to be shared and celebrated. HSP Awards is where our community can come together with a positive vibe to celebrate shared success and collective impact.

Quality of Life Framework

The HSP Awards are grounded in the internationally recognized Quality of Life Framework developed by Dr. Robert Schalock. This framework helps assess the impact of home sharing providers using key indicators that reflect what matters most to people with developmental disabilities. It includes eight domains across three areas of life: independence, social participation, and wellbeing, offering a holistic view of a person with disabilities' lived experience.

Fostering relationships with family, friends, and community members through social networks and emotional or physical supports.

Get Involved as a Volunteer

The HSP Awards would not be possible without the support of people who step forward to help. Volunteering is your chance to be part of the event, contributing your time, skills, and energy in meaningful ways.

Whether it is welcoming guests, assisting with event operations, or lending your expertise behind the scenes, every volunteer plays an important role in creating a smooth and memorable experience. Along the way you will meet new people, gain valuable experience, and share in the excitement of celebrating excellence.

Meet the extradonary

The HSP Awards recipients include some of the home sharing providers who have demonstrated outstanding dedication, compassion, and leadership in supporting individuals within the home sharing model. Their commitment has helped create welcoming homes, strengthen community connections, and improve quality of life for the people they support.

Personal Development Example

Under Jordan’s support, Jessie learned to manage her daily schedule and now independently organizes her weekly activities, including art classes and volunteer shifts. With access to assistive tools and patient guidance, Jessie built confidence to speak up about what she wants. Jordan never rushes decisions. Instead, she provides options and supports Jessie in making her own choices.

Self-Determination Example

Jordan supported Jessie in creating a personal goals list for the year. They review it monthly and Jessie decides which goal to focus on next. Jordan respects Jessie’s pace and always presents options rather than instructions.

Interpersonal Relationships Example

After moving into shared living, Marco had difficulty reconnecting with his sister due to past trauma. Sam, his provider, supported him by facilitating phone calls and eventually planning a family visit. Sam also helped Marco form new friendships by encouraging community center activities.

Social Inclusion Example

Sam supported Marco in applying for a volunteer position at a local pet shelter, aligning with his interest in animals. Marco now volunteers weekly and is recognized by name when he arrives.

Rights Example

Leah worked to make sure Samir had a seat at the table. She helped him join a local advisory group and ensured he had support to vote during elections. Today, Samir serves on a housing committee. Leah treats his choices as law. They are never overridden and always respected.

Emotional Well-Being Example

When Sarah joined the home, she struggled with anxiety and trust. Maria gave her space, time, and emotional consistency. Today, Sarah smiles when she talks about her home. She says she finally feels safe and trusts Maria like family.

Physical Well-Being Example

David noticed Kevin had been more tired lately and helped schedule a doctor’s appointment. As a result, Kevin received care and has since been more energetic. David also supports Kevin’s weekly swim sessions and ensures he gets nutritious meals.

Material Well-Being Example

Anika wanted to visit her cousin. Alisha helped her build a budget and apply for a grant to help cover costs. With this support, Anika made the trip in the spring, a goal she once thought was out of reach.
