Let’s Talk About Honoring Traditions in Disability Inclusion

Across British Columbia, Indigenous communities are showing that disability inclusion is not just a service. It is a shared responsibility rooted in culture, connection, and care. According to Indigenous Disability Canada (BCANDS), there are more than 65,000 Indigenous peoples in BC living with disabilities, and many are supported through culturally grounded programs that blend traditional teachings with modern supports.

By integrating ceremonies, on-the-land activities, and language revitalization with contemporary care, these communities remind us that inclusion flourishes when identity and culture remain at the center. When we make space for traditional knowledge, we do not just build programs. We nurture belonging, respect, and community strength.

Lynne Seagle × Open Future Learning

Lynne Seagle is a transformative leader in the field of intellectual and developmental disabilities. She has spent her life reshaping how society views and supports people, focusing on listening to what individuals truly want for themselves.

In the mid-1980s, Lynne guided the Hope House Foundation through a major shift. Instead of placing people in group homes, she asked them how they wanted to live. The answers changed everything. Most people shared three priorities: to have a home of their own, to find meaningful work, and to build friendship and love.

This conversation started a movement toward person-centered services and inclusion. Lynne’s leadership reminds us that real change begins by asking people what matters most to them.

By exploring this module, you will learn how to:

  • Recognize the importance of listening to personal preferences
  • Understand the shift from group settings to individual choice
  • Apply principles of inclusion and dignity in your work
  • Reflect on how asking the right questions can transform lives
