Housing and Support Funding Programs in British Columbia

The following programs and funds are available in British Columbia to help individuals, families, and communities access affordable housing, improve accessibility, and receive rental assistance. Some are ongoing funding streams, while others are specific resources or information services.


1. Rental Assistance Program (RAP)

Provides monthly rent assistance to low-income working families earning less than $60,000 per year who have at least one dependent child. Applicants must reapply annually to continue receiving support.

2. BC Rebate for Accessible Home Adaptations (BC RAHA)

Offers rebates of up to $20,000 for accessibility modifications that help seniors and people with disabilities live independently. Eligible projects include ramps, bathroom modifications, and other accessibility upgrades. Funding is available on a first-come, first-served basis and renews annually on April 1.

3. Community Housing Fund

A $3.3 billion provincial investment to create more than 20,000 affordable rental homes for people with low and moderate incomes by 2031–32. Funding is allocated to housing providers, non-profits, and community organizations through calls for proposals issued by BC Housing.

4. Shelter Aid for Elderly Renters (SAFER)

Provides monthly rent assistance to seniors aged 60 and over with low to moderate incomes who pay rent for their homes. Recent program improvements included a one-time rental benefit of $430 for those also receiving RAP or SAFER subsidies.

5. BC Family Benefit

Automatically paid to eligible low- and middle-income families with children under 18. Payment amounts vary based on the number of children and household income. In 2025, an extra inflation-adjustment bonus averaging $445 per family was provided in addition to the regular monthly benefit.

6. Home Owner Grant

Reduces the amount of property tax paid on a principal residence. Provides $570 for properties in the Capital Regional District, Metro Vancouver Regional District, and Fraser Valley Regional District, and $770 for other areas in BC. Higher grant amounts may apply for seniors, veterans, and people with disabilities.

7. Tenant Resource & Advisory Centre (TRAC)

Provides tenants with information on tenancy agreements, renters’ rights, dispute resolution, and housing law. Publishes the Tenant Survival Guide and offers training workshops for renters and advocates.

8. Indigenous Housing Fund

Provides funding for housing projects that meet the needs of Indigenous individuals, families, and communities. Supports both on- and off-reserve projects, often in partnership with Indigenous organizations and housing providers.

9. Supportive Housing Fund

Funds the development of supportive housing for people experiencing homelessness or living with complex needs. Often paired with on-site support services to promote stability and well-being.

10. Women’s Transitional Housing Fund

Provides funding for the development of transitional housing for women (and their children) fleeing violence or experiencing homelessness. Includes second-stage housing and long-term safe housing options.
