How Home Sharing Works

Home sharing is an arrangement where an adult with a disability lives in a person’s home and receives support and services based on their personal goals and needs. Home sharing services are offered in many ways. Some people live with family, others live with a roommate or a couple and some may live in a separate suite that is part of the home. By sharing skills and experiences, home sharing providers and the individuals they live with enrich each other’s lives.

Responsibilities

As a home sharing provider, you help an adult with a developmental disability live safely and meaningfully. The type of support you provide will depend on the needs of the person you are supporting. By responding to their unique needs, you provide personalized care that cultivates their safety, growth, and well-being.

Role & Compensation

Home sharing providers receive compensation based on the established home sharing rate structure. The specific amount depends on the individual’s level of disability support needs, as determined by the Guide to Support Allocation (GSA) assessment tool. Payments come from both Community Living BC (CLBC) and individual contributions. Generally, individuals with higher support needs may receive higher compensation due to the increased level of care and support required. Home sharing providers operate as independent contractors, and this compensation is non-taxable.
