Celebrating Pride Year-Round

Pride Month is a time to celebrate love, diversity, and equality, but creating an inclusive home is something we should do all year long. In home sharing, where someone lives with a caregiver or support person, small, everyday actions can make a big difference in helping 2SLGBTQIA+ individuals feel seen, valued, and safe.

Why Year-Round Inclusion Matters

For many people, their gender identity or sexual orientation is a core part of who they are. But they may also face stigma or feel unsafe talking about it. That’s why home sharing providers play an important role. When a home is truly inclusive, the person you support can be themselves, without fear of judgment.

Inclusion isn’t a one-time event. It’s a daily practice.

Example

Jasmine, a queer woman with a disability, lives with a home sharing provider in Vancouver. During Pride Month, her provider decorated the living room with rainbow flags, but what mattered more to Jasmine was that her provider made space for her to talk openly year-round. They regularly watched LGBTQ2S+ documentaries together, and her provider always used inclusive language, even when talking about future relationships or dating.

Inclusive Practices You Can Do Every Day

1. Use Inclusive Language

  • Ask about and use the person’s chosen name and pronouns
  • Don’t assume someone is straight or cisgender (cisgender = identifying with the gender assigned at birth)

2. Celebrate Diverse Stories

  • Watch shows, read books, or listen to music by 2SLGBTQIA+ artists
  • Attend events together like the Vancouver Queer Film Festival or a Pride picnic

3. Respect Privacy

  • Never out someone (share their identity) without permission
  • Let the person you support decide how and when to share their identity

4. Create a Supportive Environment

  • Hang a small Pride sticker or flag in the home
  • Make sure the person knows they are welcome to be themselves every day of the year

5. Learn Together

  • Attend inclusive workshops or training
  • Ask questions with kindness and curiosity
