In particular we are seeking recruitment representation from outside the lower mainland for the following positions: 

  • Self-Advocate Representative(s), Director
  • Home Sharing Provider Representative(s), Director
  • Service Provider Representative(s), Director
  • Finance/Accounting, Director  

Accountability

The Board of Directors is collectively accountable to individuals, their families, organizations, the community, funders and other key community partners. They are accountable for the HSSSBC’s performance in realizing its mission and achieving its goals, and for the effective stewardship of financial and human resources and for the overall quality of supports and services provided.

Responsibilities

Leadership & Governance

  • Provide leadership and guidance to advance the organization’s mission and goals.
  • Contribute expertise in finance, legal matters, marketing, or advocacy to enhance the society’s capabilities.
  • Participate in evaluating the board’s performance and the society’s leadership effectiveness.
  • Ensure adherence to the by-laws, code of conduct, and other board policies.
  • Identify and assist in recruiting prospective board members.

Board Meetings & Decision-Making

  • Prepare for and attend regular board meetings.
  • Actively engage in discussions and decision-making processes.
  • Participate in developing a strategic plan to guide future decision-making.

Financial Oversight & Accountability

  • Participate in the approval of the annual budget.
  • Monitor the financial performance of HSSSBC in relation to the approved budget.

Community Engagement & Advocacy

  • Serve as an ambassador for the organization, promoting its mission and values.
  • Stay informed about community issues relevant to HSSSBC’s work.

Qualifications

  • Previous board or leadership experience in the non-profit sector (highly desirable).
  • Commitment to the mission and values of HSSSBC.
  • Expertise in accounting, legal matters, or lived experience as a self-advocate.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a diverse group of individuals.
  • Openness to learning.
  • Strong critical thinking and analytical skills.
  • Knowledge of and connections within the home-sharing community and the field in which HSSSBC operates.
  • Availability to dedicate sufficient time to board responsibilities.
  • Understanding of board governance.

Time Commitment

5-10 hours per month. Terms are three years and you can serve up to a total of two terms.
